Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (BANSDOC) was established in 1972 as an unit of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR). In 1987 BANSDOC and National Science Library (NSL) were amalgamated and the newly created organization was renamed as BANSDOC owing the status of a premier national organization and apex body in the country with the recommendation of the National Science and Technology Policy envisaged in 1987. According to mandatory role and responsibility BANSDOC is dealing with library, documentation and information services, products and systems in the field of information science, information and communication technology. BANSDOC is a national centre under the Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology. BANSDOC's activities are under the following categories :

BANSDOC as a multidisciplinary National Scientific and Technological Documentation Centre has been providing library, information and documentation services that aim at fulfilling the latest and updated information which are the needs of the scientific community, entrepreneurs, planners, policy makers, educationists and administrators in the country from all over the world. Its mandated functionalities are service delivery and facilitation of services. Both of these entail research work on information management, services, products and systems and information resources. With the advent of modern information and communication technology as a career of library, information and documentation, the profession here has become career-oriented and complex for the traditional workforces. The Government of Bangladesh has been rendering all out cooperation to upgrade its status by skilled manpower.

BANSDOC houses the National Science Library (BANSDOC Library) that acts as a major information resource centre in the country in the field of Science and ICT. It has the finest collections in Information Science and Information and Communication Technology and a strong reference collection in general S&T aspects. It holds over about 19,000 books, about 425 periodical titles both Local and Foreign in the field of Science and ICT. A significant number of these foreign periodicals are received in electronic form in CD-ROMs. BANSDOC has set up an Electronic/Digital Library Division with facilities to access information from CD-ROMs.

To support its ICT services, BANSDOC has set up an ICT based Cyber Service Centre which is well equipped with the computer and online broadband connected networking facilities to ensure all out high quality cyber services to the users.

BANSDOC works closely with similar counterpart institutions in the countries over the world to bring about global information exchange. BANSDOC is associated with the activities of International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID), International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), Commonwealth Library Associations (COMLA), SAARC Documentation Centre (SDC), European Patent Office (EPO), European Commission (EC), UNESCO, ISESCO etc.

A team of about 38 personnel comprising scientific, technical and administrative staff is handling the programmes and activities of BANSDOC. Over 12 personnel of the total staff are graduates or post-graduates in science, information science and ICT.
